Living Room Painting Services
Walls and Ceiling
Living room walls in Cheltenham’s Regency and Victorian properties are original lime plaster. Lime plaster moves slightly with the seasons, which creates fine hairline cracks over time.
We prepare thoroughly and apply a breathable primer on original plasterwork. Flat or eggshell finishes suit period walls well — vinyl silk and satin amplify surface irregularities on lime plaster.
Bay Window Alcoves
Bay windows are a feature of Victorian and Edwardian living rooms in Charlton Kings, Tivoli, and Battledown. The reveals, sills, and internal face of the bay need to be painted as a coordinated element of the room.
We paint bay reveals, window boards, and frames as part of the living room project. The bay often receives more light than the rest of the room, so colour choices are checked in that context.
Chimney Breast and Alcoves
The chimney breast and its flanking alcoves are the natural focal point in a Cheltenham living room. Painting the chimney breast in a deeper or contrasting colour is a common and effective approach.
We paint chimney breasts and alcoves as part of the full living room repaint. Both alcove faces, the alcove ceiling, and any shelving faces are included. For standalone feature wall work, see our feature wall painting page.
Coving and Cornicing
Run cornicing is one of the most visible features of Cheltenham’s Regency interiors. The quality of the cut at the cornicing line determines how the room reads.
We cut to the cornice line by brush on every coat. We do not rely on tape alone at period mouldings. In properties on Montpellier Walk and Pittville Circus Road, the original cornicing dates from the 1820s — these deserve care.
Picture Rails and Woodwork
Living rooms in Cheltenham’s Victorian and Edwardian properties typically have multiple horizontal elements: the cornice at ceiling level, picture rail below, dado rail in some cases, and deep skirting at floor level.
We paint all woodwork as part of the living room project. Skirting boards, picture rails, window boards, door frames, and architraves are all included unless specifically excluded. Period woodwork often requires sanding back, filling gaps, and priming before the finish coat.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Consultation
We visit and assess all surfaces. We note surface conditions, existing paint types, and period features needing individual care. Colour consultation is included at no extra charge.
2. Surface Preparation
Walls are filled, sanded, and stabilised. Hairline cracks in lime plaster are raked out and filled correctly. Woodwork is sanded and gaps filled. All surfaces receive the correct primer before the finish coat.
3. Room Protection
Flooring is covered with dustsheets throughout. Furniture is moved to the centre and sheeted, or removed if the client prefers. Fireplace surrounds, light switches, and sockets are masked.
4. Paint Application
Ceiling first, then walls, then feature elements, then woodwork. Each coat has adequate drying time. Cornicing and mouldings are cut by brush throughout. Two coats minimum; a third where coverage requires it.
5. Final Inspection and Reinstatement
We inspect all surfaces in good light and complete touch-ups before leaving. Furniture is returned and dustsheets removed. We walk through the room with the client before closing the job.

Modern Living Room
Family homes in Charlton Kings or Prestbury: £400 to £600 for walls, ceiling, and woodwork. Modern skim plaster requires less preparation than original lime.
