Exterior Painting Services

Regency Stucco Exteriors

Cheltenham has the highest concentration of Regency stucco frontages in the UK outside Bath. Stucco painted with standard masonry paint traps moisture — on north-facing elevations in Montpellier and Lansdown, this leads to blistering within a few seasons.

We use breathable coatings as standard, treat any biological growth, and consolidate eroded areas. A properly executed stucco repaint should last seven to twelve years. For full detail on masonry and render surfaces, see our masonry painting page.

Rendered Exteriors

Rendered facades are common across Cheltenham’s Victorian and Edwardian streets. Before painting, we check for structural cracks, hollow areas, and poorly bonded sections.

Loose render is hacked back and replastered. Cracks are filled with flexible exterior filler. Painting over failing render shortens the life of the finish significantly.

Windows and Woodwork

Timber sash windows, fascias, soffits, and front doors — all prepared properly and finished to last. Many sash windows in Cheltenham are original Regency or Victorian joinery. We strip back to sound timber, patch any rot, prime correctly, and apply durable exterior gloss or satin.

Our exterior woodwork service covers door painting, window frame painting, and front door painting. For timber cladding and garden structures, see our wood painting page.

uPVC and Composite Surfaces

uPVC windows, doors, and guttering can be painted with the right preparation. We use specialist primers that bond to plastic before the finish coat goes on.

We advise on expected lifespan before starting — so you have a clear picture of what to expect.

Garden Walls and Outbuildings

Stone Boundary Walls and Gate Piers

Properties in Pittville and Prestbury often have substantial boundary walls requiring breathable coatings. We assess condition and specify accordingly.

Outbuildings and Timber Structures

Timber outbuildings are covered through our shed painting service. Boundary fencing and decking are handled through our fence painting and deck painting pages.

Full Exterior Scope

Stone walls, gate piers, outbuildings, and the main house — we coordinate the full exterior scope in a single visit so nothing is missed.

Garage Doors

Garage door painting is a common addition to a full exterior repaint. Whether timber, metal, or GRP composite, we prepare and coat garage doors to match or complement the rest of the exterior scheme. Call 01242 503600 to include your garage door in your exterior quote.

How Our Exterior Painting Works

1. Site Assessment

We visit and check every surface — render condition, existing coating, surface type, and biological growth. We identify repairs needed before painting starts.

2. Surface Preparation

We clean moss, algae, and loose material. Render is repaired where needed. Timber is stripped to sound material. Biological growth is treated and allowed to dwell before rinsing.

3. Priming

Stucco and render get a breathable masonry primer. Bare timber gets a specialist timber primer. The right primer for each surface determines whether the finish lasts or fails early.

4. Paint Application

Exterior paint needs dry conditions to cure correctly. We monitor weather forecasts and plan application phases accordingly. Two finish coats are standard. High-exposure north-facing walls get a third coat where needed.

5. Inspection and Touch-Up

Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in good light. Touch-ups are done before we leave. We walk through the finished work with you before closing the job.

What Drives the Price

Surface area is the primary factor — a four-storey Regency townhouse has considerably more wall area than a Victorian semi. Access requirements also increase with height.

Surface condition and paint system also affect cost. Failing render needs repair before painting. Breathable systems cost more per litre but last significantly longer on Regency stucco.

Victorian Semi (Charlton Kings or Tivoli)

Rendered walls: £1,800 to £3,000. Add £500 to £900 for fascias, soffits, and windows.

Regency Terrace (Montpellier or Lansdown)

Stucco-fronted: £3,000 to £6,000 depending on condition and number of storeys.

For masonry-specific coating advice, see our masonry painting page.

Full Exterior with Woodwork (Battledown or Prestbury)

4-bed detached, well-maintained: £2,800 to £5,000. Add £800 to £2,000 where timber needs significant preparation.

For exterior timber including gates and cladding, see our wood painting page.
