Deck Painting in Cheltenham

Cheltenham Decorators carry out deck painting across Cheltenham and the surrounding Cotswolds catchment.

- Balustrades and vertical posts painted or stained as a complete unit
- Steps and handrails assessed for anti-slip coating where needed
- Hardwood and softwood boards specified with the correct product
- Anti-slip additives included on all high-use and access areas
We work on decked areas regularly. Hardwood boards in Prestbury, painted balustrades in Charlton Kings, and steps on Victorian extensions in Tivoli each need a different approach to prep and finish.

Decking Boards
Decking boards take more wear than almost any other painted surface in a garden. Foot traffic, furniture legs, rainwater pooling, and frost damage all work against the coating over time.
We inspect every board before we start. Boards with surface algae or greying are cleaned before any coating is applied — applying treatment over algae growth is one of the most common reasons deck treatments fail early.
Softwood boards typically take a penetrating stain well. Hardwood boards, particularly ipe or bangkirai, need a specific oil-based system, as standard fence stains will not bond to dense tropical hardwoods without a pre-treatment step.
Balustrades and Posts
Balustrades define how a deck looks from the garden. Poorly finished posts and rails stand out immediately against freshly treated boards.
We paint balustrades and vertical posts as part of the complete deck job. For period properties in Charlton Kings and Pittville, balustrades often get a solid paint finish rather than a stain for a crisper, more formal appearance.
We use a durable exterior gloss or satinwood on balustrade posts and horizontal rails, with application by brush throughout to reach into all joints and internal corners.
Steps and Handrails
Steps and handrails are safety-critical surfaces. A deck step that becomes slippery after rain is a hazard regardless of how well it looks.
We assess all steps before treating. Where steps are likely to become slippery, we recommend an anti-slip additive — especially important for north-facing decks in Battledown or Charlton Kings, where shade keeps surfaces damp for longer.
Handrails are painted or stained to match the balustrades, with extra coverage on all joints, post tops, and horizontal surfaces that collect water.

Deck Staining vs Paint and Anti-Slip Finishes

Deck Staining vs Paint
Stain and opaque deck paint serve different purposes. The right choice depends on the timber species, the existing surface, and the desired appearance.
Stain penetrates the grain and allows the timber texture to show — it suits new or lightly weathered decking where the original wood character is worth preserving. It typically needs reapplication every 2 to 4 years.
Opaque deck paint sits on the surface and gives a solid colour. It is better for older or heavily weathered boards where the surface is no longer consistent, and can revive a deck that stain alone would not improve. We advise on the best system at the site visit based on what we find.
Anti-Slip Finishes
Standard deck coatings become slippery when wet. On any deck used as a thoroughfare, particularly around steps, an anti-slip finish is worth including.
We apply anti-slip additives to the finish coat on all high-use areas. These contain fine aggregate particles that give grip underfoot without changing the appearance of the deck — the anti-slip element is barely visible in the finished surface.
For wider exterior painting and timber work, we bring the same preparation standards to every surface we treat.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We check every board for rot, splitting, loose fixings, and existing coating condition. We identify boards that need replacement and any raised fixings that need countersinking before coating.
2. Preparation
Algae, moss, and grey oxidisation are removed with a specialist deck cleaner. Bare or weathered timber is brightened to open the grain. Gaps and cracks are assessed for filling or sealant.
3. Priming
Bare sections, end-grain cuts, and any new replacement boards receive a primer or base coat. Hardwood boards get a specific pre-treatment to improve adhesion before staining.
4. First Coat
Applied by brush along the board length, working the product into the grain and all grooves. We pay particular attention to board ends and gaps where water can collect.
5. Second Coat and Inspection
The finish coat follows after full drying of the first. Steps, handrails, and anti-slip areas are inspected for coverage in good daylight before we sign off.

Deck Painting Costs in Cheltenham
Prices below are estimates only. Call 01242 503600 for a precise quote.
Standard Softwood Decking
Clean, treat, and two coats applied per square metre. Softwood boards are generally the most straightforward to prepare, provided algae and greying are addressed first.
Typical range: £12 to £20 per square metre.
Hardwood Decking
Pre-treatment, stain, and two coats per square metre. Hardwood boards — particularly tropical species — need a compatible pre-treatment to ensure the stain bonds correctly.
Typical range: £18 to £30 per square metre.
What Drives the Price
Deck size is only one factor. Timber species and condition, deck complexity (steps, balustrades, built-in seating), and product choice all affect the final cost.
Balustrades and handrails are priced separately at £15 to £25 per linear metre for prep, paint, and two coats.
