Masonry Painters in Cheltenham

Masonry painting on white stucco Georgian property in Cheltenham by Cheltenham Decorators

Cheltenham Decorators are masonry painters covering exterior walls across all property types in the town.

  • Rendered walls treated with breathable coatings, not standard masonry emulsion
  • Exposed brick consolidated, cleaned, and coated with colour-matched masonry paint
  • Stone facades treated with silicate or limewash systems, no moisture-sealing
  • Biological growth treated and allowed to dwell before cleaning
  • Breathable silicate and silicone-based systems specified for all period walls

We work on exterior masonry regularly. Stucco-fronted terraces in Montpellier, exposed brick in Charlton Kings, and Cotswold stone walls in Prestbury each need a different coating approach. We know the difference.

Masonry Painting Services in Cheltenham

Rendered Walls

Cheltenham’s Regency townhouses in Montpellier, Lansdown, and Pittville are largely stucco-rendered. This is not a modern acrylic product — it is lime-based and needs to breathe to remain stable.

We use breathable masonry coatings on all lime render. Sealing with an impermeable paint traps moisture inside the wall, causing blistering, cracking, and accelerated render failure.

Render condition is assessed before any coating goes on. Cracks are filled with a flexible, breathable filler, and loose sections are flagged. The wall goes into paint in sound condition.

Exposed Brick

Exposed brick in Charlton Kings, Tivoli, and Battledown varies in porosity and condition. Some brickwork is stable and only needs a clean. Some has had poor-quality coatings applied in the past.

We clean brick surfaces thoroughly before coating. Any previous paint that is flaking or poorly adhered is removed. For brick showing early deterioration, we apply a consolidating primer before the finish coat.

Colour-matched masonry coatings give exposed brick a consistent finish without obscuring its texture.

Stone Facades

Cotswold stone walls in Prestbury, Winchcombe, and Bourton-on-the-Water need a paint system fully compatible with the stone. Conventional masonry paint can lock moisture into porous limestone, causing spalling in winter weather.

We use silicate-based or limewash systems on stone facades. These bond with the stone surface rather than forming a skin on top. Moisture moves freely in and out, and the stone remains stable.

Breathable Coatings and Biological Growth Treatment

Breathable Coatings

Most exterior walls in Cheltenham’s period housing stock require a breathable paint system. This includes stucco render, lime mortar joints, exposed limestone, and old brick with lime-based pointing.

We choose coatings based on wall construction and exposure level. Silicone-modified masonry paint suits many rendered walls. Silicate paint suits stone and aged lime render. Standard acrylic masonry paint is not used on period walls.

Where we take on a masonry project, the paint system is matched to the wall — not chosen from what is cheapest or most available.

Biological Growth Treatment

Biological growth — algae, lichen, and moss — is common on north-facing and shaded walls throughout Cheltenham. Left untreated, it retains moisture and accelerates surface deterioration.

We treat all biological growth before painting. A mould treatment is applied and left to work. Once the growth is dead and dry, the surface is cleaned back thoroughly. Painting over active growth causes the coating to fail within two to three seasons.

After coating, we apply a fungicidal additive to the finish coat on susceptible surfaces. This extends the life of the treatment significantly.

How Our Masonry Painting Process Works

1. Assessment

We inspect the full wall surface. Crack patterns, render adhesion, biological growth, previous coatings, and drainage details are all checked. We advise on what preparation is needed before quoting.

2. Preparation

Biological growth is treated first. Cracks and voids are filled with compatible materials. Loose render or pointing is flagged and addressed before any coating goes on.

3. Priming

Bare or porous sections receive a stabilising primer coat. This prevents the finish coat from being absorbed unevenly into the surface.

4. First Coat

Applied by brush or roller using the specified paint system. Coverage is checked across the full surface. No thinning of the product beyond manufacturer guidance.

5. Second Coat and Inspection

The finish coat goes on after the first has cured. We check coverage, colour uniformity, and any areas of uneven absorption before signing off.

Masonry Painting Costs in Cheltenham

Prices below are estimates only. Call 01242 503600 for a precise quote.

Surface Condition

Walls with flaking paint, biological growth, or cracked render need more preparation. Treatment and remedial work add time before any coating goes on, affecting the overall cost.

Coating System

Breathable silicate or silicone-based systems cost more than standard masonry paint. For period walls in Cheltenham, there is no alternative — the correct system must be used.

Masonry painting costs vary considerably depending on wall area, surface condition, and the paint system required. A smooth rendered semi in Charlton Kings costs less than a heavily weathered stucco townhouse in Montpellier.

Wall Area and Access

Larger properties and those requiring scaffolding or tower access incur higher costs. Typical ranges: terraced house front elevation £400–£800; full exterior £1,200–£3,500; biological growth treatment standalone £150–£400.

Access requirements are confirmed during the site visit and any scaffold costs are included in the written quote.
